APEC Thank our lucky stars, the charges against the infamous Chaser 11 have been DROPPED. At last, we can stop worrying and instead celebrate (hence the bubbly)!
Below is a transcript from the story that aired on ABC1 News Tasmania (28 April 2008).
(ABC Presenter) Peter Gee: The authorities were outraged when the ABC's Chaser program broke through APEC's wall of steel last year. But The Chaser team has had the last laugh with all charges now dropped. 11 members of The Chaser team were arrested when their fake motorcade entered a restricted zone. But the Director of Public Prosecutions says they were waved through by police and there's no evidence to prove that they deliberately breached security. The police, though, are not backing down.
Policeman: . . . persecuting this matter, in respect of who there were, so, er, they broke the law on the day, that was my belief and I'll do exactly the same tomorrow.
Julian Morrow: I think that APEC was a legitimate thing to satirise and, um, other people may have satirised it, but we just did a silly stunt.
Peter Gee: But The Chaser issued this postscript.
(A message from) Osama bin Laden: The Chaser may have had the charges dropped against them, but I am going to have them trialed for copyright breaches.
Peter Gee: As for the NSW government, it hopes that today’s decision doesn’t send the wrong message ahead of the Pope’s visit in July. (Is he trying to imply something here?)
According to SBS, the charges were dropped because the Director of Public Prosecutions said that prosecution of the Chaser 11 would probably have not been successful.

Also on the note of APEC, the Chaser have won the 2008 MTV for best TV moment for the APEC motorcade stunt! Other MTV awards winners include Delta Goodrem, Timbaland and Kevin Andrews (who was the former Howard Government Immigration Minister who banned Snoop Dogg in 2007, which The Chaser also satirised). MediaWatch Poor Chris Taylor and the ABC. Both he and the ABC were “attacked” by ABC1’s MediaWatch (28 April 2008), and by other people, for the satirical ads that he made for ABC1. These ads were about ABC personalities being nominated for Gold Logies, but the ad mixed the issue of hunger and poverty with the Logies, something which some people didn’t like (probably the latte sipping, I-love-public-broadcasting type of people).
